[ARCHIVED] Information from the City of Asbury Park’s Transportation Department: Understanding Complete Streets

Information from the City of Asbury Parks Transportation Department

Complete Streets is an approach to planning, designing, building, operating, and maintaining streets that enables safe access for all people who need to use them, including pedestrians, bicyclists, motorists and public transit riders of all ages and abilities.

While Complete Streets is a process and approach to street design, there is no singular design prescription for Complete Streets. Each one is unique and responds to the needs of the specific community. A Complete Street may include: sidewalks, bike lanes, bus lanes, public transportation stops, crossing opportunities, median islands, accessible pedestrian signals, curb extensions, modified vehicle travel lanes, streetscape, and landscape treatments and more.

A Complete Streets approach reduces motor vehicle-related crashes and pedestrian and bicycle risk while promoting the growth of bicycle use. Since the adoption of a Complete Streets policy in 2015, the City of Asbury Park includes Complete Streets elements in all roadway projects to enable safe use by all types of users.
