[ARCHIVED] Information from the City of Asbury Park’s Transportation Dept: Understanding Raised Intersections

Information from the City of Asbury Parks Transportation Department

Similar to speed humps, raised intersections reinforce slow speeds and encourage motorists to yield to pedestrians at crosswalks, creating safer pedestrian environments. Since raised intersections are flush with the sidewalk, they ensure drivers traverse the crossing slowly.

Construction involves providing ramps on each intersection approach and elevating the entire intersection to the level of the sidewalk. They can be built with a variety of materials, including asphalt, concrete or pavers. As part of the treatment, crosswalks on each approach are also elevated to enable pedestrians to cross the road at the same level as the sidewalk.

As a form of traffic calming, raised intersections tend to be the most predictable in reducing vehicle speeds. Raised intersections are one of many traffic calming techniques and strategies being implemented and evaluated for their effectiveness to determine what work best for our City.
