Information from the City of Asbury Park’s Transportation Department: Understanding Bump Outs

Bump outs are an expansion of the curb line into the lane of the roadway for a portion of a block, either at a corner or mid-block. Bump outs are typically constructed as an extension of the raised sidewalk into the roadway but can be done quickly, and cost effectively, with paint and bollards.

Also known as curb extensions, bump outs enhance pedestrian safety by reducing crossing distances; encouraging motor vehicles to make wider slower turns; increasing visibility between vehicles and pedestrians; relieving sidewalk crowding; and providing space for functional elements such as seating, plantings, and furniture. In addition, two curb extensions can be located on opposite sides of a street to create a mid-block narrowing or at an intersection to create a gateway utilizing visual friction to slow traffic.

Bump outs are one of many traffic calming techniques and strategies being evaluated for their effectiveness to determine what work best for our City.
