Easy-to-read house numbers serve as more than a convenience for guests and the pizza delivery person. In an emergency, they ensure that response crews can locate your residence quickly. Make them pop with these ideas:
- Stay away from script. Use actual numerals; do not have the number spelled out in script as this makes it hard to see and takes time to read. By the time the Emergency Personnel can make out what they say, they may already have passed your house, and will have to go around the block, wasting precious moments.
- Bump up the size. Install numbers that are at least 4 inches tall. Small numbers are hard to read, especially if your home is far from the road.
- Add contrast. Be sure there is a marked contrast in color and brightness between the number and the surface to which it’s attached. If there isn’t, switch to a more noticeable color or mount the number on a contrasting background.
- Lighten up. Even if your house number is clearly visible during the day, it may not be after dark. Add an exterior light to your home to illuminate the numbers.
- Post it. If you have a long driveway or lack a good spot on your home’s exterior, display your house number on a post or large stone near the foot of your driveway.
Encourage your neighbors and friends to have visible house numbers. If we can see their numbers as we are driving down the block, it makes it easier for us to find you.
