Asbury Park Public Arts Commission Seeking Artists for Mural Project

We are currently seeking mural artists to create murals during the month of August 2022
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
The City of Asbury Park, in conjunction with The Asbury Park Public Arts Commission, and with support from the Asbury Park Arts Council, is seeking artists from all backgrounds, locations, and levels of experience to create public art (murals) for a permanent mural project located on the city-owned Wastewater Treatment Facility located at 1700 Kingsley Street on the north end of the Asbury Park Boardwalk.
The program emphasizes focus on artistic freedom and expression, encouraging participating artists to bring their personal artistic vision to life leading to a diverse range of styles and content in a permanent public art installation in Asbury Park.
We seek to create opportunities for muralists at different experience levels and will offer multiple wall/panel sizes as palettes.
STIPEND:
The following stipends shall be paid by the City of Asbury Park to the selected applicants:
Three Mural Panels – will provide artists up to $2500 *which includes artist stipend and materials
Two Mural Panels – will provide artists up to $2000 *which includes artist stipend and materials
One Mural Panel – will provide artists up to $1000 *which includes artist stipend and materials
- Note: Walls will be offered/assigned at the discretion of Asbury Park Public Arts Commission.
APPROVALS:
The City of Asbury Park & Asbury Park Public Arts Commission shall secure any necessary local building permits, licenses, or approvals necessary for the lawful creation and execution of the artwork.
ELIGIBILITY:
Applications are open to any artist who follows the program guidelines.
Artists may apply as an individual or group; however, the budget & stipend provided is per mural, not per person.
Artists with all levels of experience are encouraged to apply. It is recommended, not required, that applicants have some experience painting outdoor murals at a larger scale.
Artists should visit the walls and familiarize themselves with the size and texture before applying. The wall is made of yellow brick.
Artists must be available to paint in August 2022 and must have the mural finished by September 5, 2022. No exceptions to the finish date.
SELECTION PROCESS:
Submissions will be reviewed by the members of the City of Asbury Park and the Asbury Park Public Arts Commission.
The final approval of the submission(s)/design(s) will be by resolution of the City Council.
SELECTION CRITERIA:
Applications will be reviewed on (including but not limited to) the following criteria:
- Quality of design and concept.
- Appropriateness of qualifications for the project - applicants having experience painting outdoor murals are preferred.
- Relevance to the history and/or identity of Asbury Park.
- Probability of successful execution and completion of the project.
- Asbury Park artists encouraged to apply.
PROJECT TIMELINE:
The anticipated start date for muralists is on/around August 15, 2022.
All murals must be completed by Labor Day (September 5, 2022).
ARTIST AGREEMENT:
Selected artists will be required to sign and comply with a Final Mural Agreement with the City of Asbury Park and a Hold Harmless form.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
The artist must be able to keep the content of their work “family friendly,” no nudity or overtly sexual themes, hate speech or glorification of violence. The artist must refrain from painting anything that defames or invades the rights of any person, living or dead; or anything that could be construed as harmful to a third party.
Selected artists may be asked to submit further details of design.
Artists may not reproduce any copyrighted material.
Artwork shall not have product placement or advertising.
Final artwork must be clear coated to protect the piece from weather and the elements. Weep holes found in the wall for drainage, must not be covered with paint or clearcoat.

SUBMISSION PROCESS:
Please complete and submit one (1) original and twelve (12) copies of the submission requirement and consent waiver forms by 11am on July 14th, 2022. No late submissions will be accepted. In addition, please provide an accurate drawing of your proposed design. Your proposed design must be in proportion to one or more wall panels.
