City of Asbury Park Awarded $434,706 NJ Department of Transportation Municipal Aid Program Grant for Eighth Avenue Road Improvements and Capital Projects Updates

12/22/21, Asbury Park, NJ – The City of Asbury Park has been awarded a $434,706 Municipal Aid Program Grant by the New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) to fund a roadway improvement project on Eighth Avenue from Deal Lake Drive to Kingsley Street. The project, which is anticipated to start construction in 2022, will include curb upgrades for ADA compliance at every intersection, new driveway aprons, partial sidewalk replacement, sanitary sewer upgrades, drainage improvements, full-depth road reconstruction and final repaving and restriping.

“We’re thrilled to be awarded this NJDOT grant and look forward to improving Eighth Avenue which has been in dire need of repair,” said Mayor John Moor, “City Council’s goal is to bring all Asbury Park streets up to the latest standards, making them safer for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists. Over the last five years, more than 10 miles of streets have been repaved—representing approximately 27% of City streets. In addition, the project includes the replacement of the century-old sanitary sewer system under the street which we have been addressing in all street projects. We look forward to continuing this much-needed work.”

“Asbury Park was one of over 625 applicants who requested more than $363 million in funding from the $161.25 million NJDOT Municipal Aid program,” said Transportation Director Michael Manzella, “The program allows municipalities to request assistance for improvements of local transportation networks. We’re grateful for the State’s support and will be using the grant to supplement existing capital investment that the City allocates to transportation improvements each year.”

City of Asbury Park Streets & Transportation Capital Projects Updates

The following is a complete current list of capital project updates related to streets and transportation in the City of Asbury Park:

• Construction will begin on Bond Street between Fifth Avenue and Summerfield Avenue in January 2022. The project, partially funded by NJDOT, will include curb upgrades for ADA compliance at every intersection, new driveway aprons, partial sidewalk replacement, sanitary sewer upgrades, drainage improvements, full-depth road reconstruction and final repaving and restriping.
   
• Design work will begin soon on reconstruction of Monroe Avenue from Memorial Drive to Prospect Avenue and Comstock Street from Asbury Avenue to Prospect Avenue. The project, partially funded by NJDOT, will include pavement reconstruction, concrete curb and sidewalk replacement, drainage infrastructure improvements, and replacement of the sanitary sewer main. Construction is anticipated to begin in 2022.
   
• Design work continues for reconstruction of Memorial Drive from Asbury Avenue to Sixth Avenue. The project, partially funded by NJDOT, will include pavement reconstruction, concrete curb and sidewalk replacement, drainage infrastructure improvements, the installation of traffic signals and Third and Fourth Avenues, the installation of protected bicycle facilities, and replacement of the sanitary sewer trunk line. Construction is anticipated to begin in Spring 2022.
   
• Construction of an upgraded traffic signal at Asbury Avenue and Ridge Avenue will continue through the winter with completion estimated for spring 2022.
   
• NJ American Water has completed its next phase of water main replacement. As part of the replacement project, the following streets have been repaved:
  1. Fifth Avenue (Locust Drive to Memorial Drive)
  2. Sunset Avenue (Bridge Street to Ocean Avenue)
  3. Sunset Drive (Sunset Avenue to Comstock Street)
  4. Third Avenue (Ridge Avenue to Memorial Drive)
  5. Seventh Avenue (Main Street to Kingsley Street)
  6. Drummond Avenue (Asbury Avenue to Fourth Avenue)
  7. Prospect Avenue (Bangs Avenue to Fourth Avenue)
  8. Central Avenue (Central Court to Asbury Avenue)
  9. Comstock Street (Third Avenue to Deal Lake)
  10. Langford Street (Fifth Avenue to Sunset Avenue)

In addition, the City has installed bicycle lanes on portions of Sunset Avenue and Seventh Avenue following the pavement of those streets.

• Emory Street between Sixth and Seventh Avenues has been repaved. Emory Street between Sunset Avenue and Eighth Avenue has been re-converted to its historic one-way northbound configuration.
   
• Summerfield Avenue between Main Street and the railroad has been milled and paved.
  
  
• A public meeting was held on December 15, 2021 for the Safe Routes to School Grant for Traffic Calming on Third and Fourth Avenues. Members of the public may submit comments until January 5, 2022 at https://www.cityofasburypark.com/saferoutes.
