City Council Bans Smoking on Asbury Park Boardwalk at July 14, 2021 Council Meeting
7/15/21, Asbury Park, NJ – To help eliminate litter, and provide a healthier environment for visitors, City Council voted to ban smoking on Asbury Park Boardwalk at the July 14, 2021 Council Meeting. The ban will take effect after the required 20-day waiting period.
The change makes the rule on smoking consistent with the City's beaches and parks where smoking is already banned under New Jersey state law. Violators will be subject to summonses and fines of $250 for the first offense, $500 for the second offense, and $1,000 for each subsequent offense.
“Our ultimate goal is to keep Asbury Park’s beaches free of pollution. Banning smoking of any kind on the Asbury Park Boardwalk will help alleviate the litter we see up and down the boardwalk and keep cigarette butts from ending up in our ocean, lakes and sewer system,” said Mayor John Moor, “And since Asbury Park is seeing more visitors than ever coming to enjoy our boardwalk and beaches, we hope the ban will decrease the number of complaints we receive about secondhand smoke from people trying enjoy the outdoors.”
