5/19/20, Asbury Park, NJ – The ad hoc Asbury Park Equity Committee, established by Mayor and City Council in 2020, presented its recommendations for proposed amendments to Asbury Park Police Department’s policies and procedures for City Council’s consideration at the May 12, 2021 City Council Meeting.
The committee was charged with reviewing the APPD’s policies and procedures on police enforcement and discrimination, determining whether these policies and procedures are effective, and, if necessary, recommending proposed amendments to these policies and procedures.
Equity Committee Members included Elected Officials and City Administration, representatives from the Asbury Park Police Department, community leaders, including clergy, and individual residents of the City. All appointed members were residents of the City, or involved with a business entity, non-profit organization, educational institution or religious institution located within the City.
“We are thankful to the members of the Equity Committee who put an incredible amount of hard work into this tough process,” said Councilperson Yvonne Clayton, “The open and honest dialogue they created will ensure justice and equity for our residents by supporting the development of policies and practices that promote fairness, equity, transparency and accountability.”
“The Equity Committee was tasked with identifying the best policing practices to increase trust between the APPD and our community,” said Deputy Mayor Amy Quinn, “We welcome any additional feedback from the community as we evaluate the recommendations and move towards the next steps of implementation.”

Their feedback was invaluable in helping us formulate the recommendations for Mayor and City Council’s consideration. Our citizens and community leaders are our greatest strength—because of them we are well-positioned to help drive lasting change that will shape the future of Asbury Park. A key part of that change must be to ensure that all of our residents and neighbors feel valued and respected, and it is up to all of us to foster a culture of equity and inclusion in Asbury Park.”
